Facebook can use YOUR photography for them!

facebook Facebook can use YOUR photography for them!Do you have pictures on Facebook? It looks like the FB lawyers are using that nice little trick of hiding the cunning goodies in the legal confusion and hoping people won’t notice.

Now we enjoy Facebook as well as the next guy, but this is a bit nuts. Thanks to Everett shooting it our way.

The Facebook terms of use state that any image you post is essentially theirs for the taking. As long as it remains on their site they say they can do pretty much whatever they want with it. Here’s the quote from their terms of use.

On the suggestions side. I myself always post low res images. Not only on FB, but on Flickr, my site etc. I usually logo them, and keep em in the 600-800px range. It’s true that at that size somebody could still steal them for their site, but what they’d get would not really be print quality. That however is no excuse for FB.

“By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose, commercial, advertising, or otherwise, on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing. You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. If you choose to remove your User Content, the license granted above will automatically expire, however you acknowledge that the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content”

Looks like it’s time for the FB lawyers to call back to earth, and for a lot of users to voice their complaints. Especially those of us that are photographers. I seem to recall Adobe doing something like this recently (wink). They backed down after a bit of outrage. For the record let me say that YOU Facebook have NO RIGHTS to use my photos. I’ve just revoked them.

Cool Product Of The Week. Kenko Extension Tubes!

419ffbsjutl_ss500_ Cool Product Of The Week. Kenko Extension Tubes!Extension tubes allow you to put a spacer between your lens and your body this giving you a close macro focus distance.

Canon sells these, but there a bit pricey, so I decided to try the Kenko brand. They work great! You still maintain the contacts with the lens so you have all the metering and AF (though manual focus generally works better when your shooting a macro). You aren’t adding any glass in between, so image quality stays good, and the tube attached just like a lens.

Now if your really into macro a dedicated lens would doubtless be better, but these tubes are pretty cool. I just stick a 25mm tube on my lens, and I’m off to the races! I find my 24mm works best on the 50mm range lens.Wider angels don;t seem to like the tube, but I think the 12mm might work better for those.

You can the the whole set of 3 for Canon Cool Product Of The Week. Kenko Extension Tubes!, or Nikon Cool Product Of The Week. Kenko Extension Tubes! off Amazon for about 160- bucks (as of writing) Or you can just get one tube and see what you think. If your getting one I’d say start with the 12mm, or 24mm for Canon or Nikon Cool Product Of The Week. Kenko Extension Tubes!

Here’s a shot I took this morning with a 24mm tube on my Canon 50mm. I’ve always thought macro was cool, this is a great way to play with it and get great results..

Why Use WordPress For Your Entire Website?

wordpress-logo Why Use WordPress For Your Entire Website? With a Word Press site I can do anything I can with a normal site and more because of a good platform and great plugins. It’s easier for me because I have more control and I can take one of the many free themes, mod it how I want and get my own look.

Word Press is a platform that many bloggers use. Many photographers use it for their blogs in fact. What many don’t realize is how much of a content management system WP is, and how good it works for doing a complete website. Yes even a photographers website. It’s like the simplicity of blogging, but on your entire website.

I use it on most of my sites (including the one your reading now) I generally make the blog and site all one. I like that integration a lot. I use mainly ShowIt Web for slideshows and embed them right into the pages for my galleries. That gives me those flashy images, with the ease of a WP site.

Now for a few implementations of sites I run WP on. These three were actually designed from the same theme, and modifies a little differently.

Here’s a few great reasons to use WordPress for your next website besides the fact that it’s free!

  • Ease
I could go on all day about the cool things you can do with WP. It’s not just function, it’s ease too. Granted to really customize things you either need to be willing to take the time, or get someone who’s a little geeky. As an example. I can start with a theme, and build a good looking site in an afternoon. After that making changes is only a web browser away, and can be done without much experience. It’s so much easier than a traditional HTML site, and WAY easier than a flash site. Continue reading ‘Why Use WordPress For Your Entire Website?’

EOS 5D MKII (EOS 7D) Yet Another RUMOR

EOS 7D, 5D MKII

Those of us in the Canon camp are really really eager for Canon to get some new product out the door to catch up with our Nikon counterparts. The 5D MK II (or 7D) has been in the rumor mill for well over a year, so it stands to reason Canon has to act soon.

Engadget is reporting on it, but there’s not many more details. This box shot could pretty easily be faked. Then again with Photokina just around the corner we would think that Canon would be making some announcements (at least they’d better be) Time will tell.
