Ah the everlasting debate of what camera is the best.
Most of us have been involved in it at some point. Nikon and Canon are thus far in the lead of others, but who knows what the future will bring with competition on the rise.
Luminous Landscape just ran a very long, and very superb article. Not a bash the other brand article but a refreshing comparison of features, ergonomics, and capabilities of Canon & Nikon systems. The author who was actually a Canon shooter, went a bought a complete Nikon system to see how he felt about the two brands.
Most of you know that I (Gavin) am a Canon shooter, and this article really helped me see some differences (I have never shot Nikon) that was not aware of. Will I be switching to Nikon anytime soon? No, but I do have some more respect for Nikon, and know some things that both brands have over the other.

You can discuss things we talked about in the show on the PPS #41 forum thread.
Lastly here’s that image we talked about during the show. It was taken at 1/60th, F4.0, ISO1000, with a Caon L 17-40 and a 580EX flash. I set the flash to about 1/16th power to allow enough light to freeze the bride and groom, but not so much that the sparklers were washed out…. Till next time, Gavin Seim

It has the distinction of winning Best Gadget at the Consumer Electronics Show. It looks to us like it has a lot of potential. It’s aimed at allowing you to post instantly to a social network, but do us Pro’s need something like this. Heck ya! We’re thinking shooting tethered without the tether. Shooting an event and having an assistant edit instantly as they come in. We would like to see a compact flash version, but is this takes off that should be a given… We hope!

I recently saw this question on a photo forum, and thought I would talk about it since it’s a common and frustrating problem. Also see the companion PPS podcast on getting clear images.
Whether people shoot Canon, Nikon, or anything else, the question is the same. What do people do to get those tack sharp, vivid, beautiful images? There’s not one magic formula but here’s some good tips to get you rolling. At the end you can post your own tips, and you’ll even find a free Photoshop action down there to help make your shots a bit more vivid.
- 5. Depth of field Thoughts
This can be easily overlooked, and is crucial. Let’s say you have a len’s that goes down to 1.4 or 2.8. This means that at those settings you get a lot of light, but the depth of field (focus) will be shallow. You can certainly get shots like this, even without a pod and on the go, and have them come out great. It just takes some practice. Don’t get discouraged when some of these are blurry. If you focus on a person 6 feet away who is slowly moving towards you, they might be blurry in the time it takes you to press the shutter.
One solution is to raise that aperture setting to 5 or higher. That will help give you more DOF, but will also require a slower shutter speed. Sometimes that shallow effect is good however, so to help you get it, take lots of shots and then pick the best ones. When you can, use a tripod help keep that camera still, and remember the focus will be shallow at those low aperture settings. If you want someones eye’s to be in focus, then you need to set the focus point right on their eye and nowhere else. Practice makes perfect.

Gavin was a guest host for this Monday’s edition of the Totally Cool Tech Podcast, reviewing the Canon Selphy ES1/ES2 Printers. The best on the go 4×6 printers available. At least in Gavin’s opinion.
TCT is a short podcast that talks about cool gadgets, and this printer is no exception.
