Welcome to the biggest most up to date list of free presets for Adobe Lightroom. Often our crazy desire for Lightroom presets is held back only because we don’t know where to find more. Until now that is. If you know of other cool free Lightroom presets let us know. Also note that presets effect RAW & JPEG files very differently. For more about that see RAW vs JPEG presets. Our Favorite Develop Presets - See How To Install Lightroom Presets:

  • Lightroom Presets on the Adobe Exchange
    There’s not very many here yet, but the Exchange has always been a great place to get ad ons for Adobe products. Keep an eye on it.
  • Seim Effects Free Lightroom Presets:
    You should find these a great addition to your growing library. Gavin Seim gives away selections from his larger preset collections that are sure to please. Some even have both JPEG & RAW versions.
  • InsideLightroom.com presets:
    Here you’ll find eight categories, inside of which area great variety of free Lightroom presets. It has examples of what the preset does. There’s everything from camera calibration presets, to color effects here. You’ll also find a useful PDF Download about using and making your own presets. One of my favorites are the two 300 presets listed in the color effects.
  • LightrooomPresets.com:
    This a good place to pick up some variety for you free LR preset collection and get some cool effects rolling. You’ll also find dome HDR prep presets here towards the bottom of the page.
  • Karin Knowland:
    Here’s a nice batch of over a dozen presets that will give you a nice variety of effects.
  • Adobe Exchange Presets:
    The Adobe exchange has all kinds of free stuff posted up by actual users and designers. This LR category is new, but it will fill up soon to be sure.
  • Sean McCormack’s IR Presets:
    Sean has an article here on the Lightroom News Blog talking about Infrared in LR, and he lets you download some of his IR results.
  • Jack Davis’s WOW Lightroom Preset Collection:
    This is a download from our friends over at OneOne Software, and yep it’s free. It’s a large preset collection that is organized in a tidy list. You can drag you mouse over the list and see the variation as they subtly change (low contrast to high contrast for example. Very well put together with lots of effects.
  • Lightroom Killer Tips Presets:
    Aside from a great LR video cast, Matt Kloskowski from Photoshop TV posts various presets on the site that you can download for free.
  • Lightroom Essentials From L7photo.com:
    Here’s a collection of free presets that includes a varied array from auto corrections to white balance adjustments to help speed up your photo modifications. You’ll find the full list on their site.
  • markus-dollinger.de Lightroom Presets:
    This site is not in English, but Lightroom is a pretty universal language for us, and download links work in any language. This is a set of six free presets that do some cool selective color effects, some general punches, etc (there’s a sample gallery)
  • Presets by Kelsey Smith:
    Kelsy has some cool stuff on her blog. Here you can download most of her presets all in in place.
  • Xequals Photography Presets
    Once you get past a slightly awkward site, you’ll find a fair variety of free presets over here.
  • NEW ~ Preset Heaven:
    This is a blog where you’ll find a variety of presets. Nice place to get some sweet goodies.

Apple Posts About Time Machine with Aperture

Apple has posted a TechNote for users of OS X 10.5 Leopard with Time Machine and Aperture. By extension, it also applies to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom users as well.

Issue or symptom

Running Time Machine backup or restore operations while Aperture is running may lead to inconsistencies in the Aperture database.

Lightroom and Leopard

LIGHTROOM

Lightroom users will have to wait a short time for an update. Adobe claims they will have a free update to Lightroom in mid November. So two weeks isn’t a bad wait at all. But if you are a hard core Lightroom user such as myself you will have to wait to put Leopard on your production machine.

The Lightroom Journal, produced by the Lightroom team has posted the following:

As noted in Adobe’s Leopard FAQ the current version of Lightroom 1.2 is not fully compatible with Leopard, Mac OS X 10.5. The good news is that we’ll be releasing an update in mid-November that will address key compatibility issues. Microsoft’s HD Photo to be adopted as JPEG XR Format

logojpeg.jpgWell the original Jpeg is getting a bit long in the tooth and by the looks of things an adoption of a new improved format may be taking it’s place over the next few years.

Among other things, the Microsoft HD Photo format is capable of higher dynamic ranges, & better compression, and has been opened up for royalty free use by Microsoft. The JPEG Committee has decided it’s a go, and to move ahead with HD Photo as a new standard under the name Jpeg XR.

Now you may be asking yourself why on earth didn’t this JPEG Committee give it a fresh name instead of taking jpeg and adding some letters. Well we’d guess it’s cuz their the “JPEG Committee” Ya a new fresh name for a new flashy format would have been better marketing, but thats what happens when you name your group after a file format before considering the ramifications of the fact that it will eventually go out of style.
