It won’t buy you a Nikon Digital DSLR, but close to it.
Found an interesting article in the Washington Post concerning the price of DSLR’s and how much those prices are falling.
Most professionals will shy away from this camera, but some semi-pros (like myself) are looking at these as great second bodies.
There is good news when it comes to price drops. Yes, it’s frustrating to see the exact same camera body’s pricetage fall when a company comes out with version 1.2. However, as those prices fall - more and more cameras sell. Most of the time, companies then re-invest in R&D. In turn, photographers get faster cameras with better features.
At least that’s the hope! Conspiracy theorists can comment below!

The Canon 50mm 1.2L lens was released late last year, and it becomes the first Canon L series 50mm lens released since the late 80’s (Canon’s 50mm 1.0L). This lens is also the widest aperture 50mm lens available (at the date of writing this).
When you take this lens out of the box, it screams just one thing: QUALITY. The weight of this lens is something that most people are not used to in a 50mm lens. Weighing in at about 1.2lbs, this lens is no small creature. The polycarbonate lens casing feels extremely sturdy, and looks like it could definitely take a beating. This lens is also physically a lot larger than the other 50mm’s that Canon makes. It’s dimensions are D:3.6″ x L2.6″, as opposed to the D:2.9″ x L:2″ of the 50mm 1.4 lens.
The lens comes with the Canon weather seals, but it is only completely weather sealed when using a UV filter. As the lens focuses, the inner barrel moves in and out and the seam it makes will let water in without the use of a UV filter.

If you caught the most recent PPS Roundtable (Episode 34) you may remember the gasps I received from my fellow roundtable peers when I mentioned that I was not backing up my digital images immediately after filling a card during a wedding or photo shoot. PPS writer Jarrod mentioned a product from Wolverine that he uses to back up his images. I took his suggestion and have been using mine for about a month now. Here is my review of the unit I purchased.
I purchased the Wolverine 120GB FlashPac 7000, 7-in-1 Portable Data Storage Device & Media Reader. I went with the largest hard drive size, 120GB with the idea of being able to immediately back up an entire season’s worth of weddings and sessions on the spot… Continue reading ‘Product Review: Wolverine FlashPac 7000 Portable Data Storage Device & Media Reader’
I will never forget my first venture to an NFL sideline. I was a young intern with WWL-TV in New Orleans and the Saints and Falcons were tied late in the 4th quarter of a divisional playoff game.
I was enamored with the action, crowd, suspense, and yes - the photographers.
I will also never forget one particular photographer (his name is not important and to be honest, I never asked) who had black electrical tape on his camera - covering the brand name, Nikon. At first, I just assumed that he was a Canon-guy and was forced to use Nikon equipment; thus, protesting the decision by his boss.
However, that was not the case. I asked him, “Why the black tape over ‘Nikon’?”
He snapped, “I’m not a walking billboard - I’m a journalist!”
It’s the reason for the recent article here on PPS, and why this story is getting a lot of attention in the photo-journalist circles.

A Recent article on PDN Online brought to our attention a topic worth discussing. It seems that security for the NFL is requiring photographers to wear safety vests. This seems like a reasonable rule, until you find out that the vest you have to wear bears advertising logos for canon, and Reebok. Now I myself am a Canon fan, but nobody better tell me to wear a billboard for them unless they plan on paying me for that advertising.
“Whether working on behalf of a news/sports organization or as a freelancer, this new requirement is a violation of the most basic ethical standards in journalism,” said a letter to the NFL signed by NPPA president Tony Overman, a photographer at The Olympian in Washington state. “In the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation I urge you to reconsider this ill-conceived policy.”
Photographers at a recent Major League Soccer match were recently forced to wear similar advertising vests. It seems that it is becoming an annoying, and disturbing trend. It’s not so much that having a logo on your vest is bad, but as a professional, being forced to wear advertising for a company is rather insulting. One has to wounder if the reason behind the vests has nothing to do with safety, and everything to do with money.
Some photographer are putting tape over the ads, and whether you like the brand or not this sounds like the perfect way to protest this nonsense. If an industry allows itself to be pushed around it will only get worse. Contrariwise however when people take a little bit of a stand, it can go a long ways. There are lots of companies that make camera bags. Tamrac is my favorite brand, and Loewpro is another popular one. For on the go shooting take a look at the Modular accessory belt
, and the accessories like this lens case
that attach to it. Also the Velocity 9
series shoulder pack a favorite of some shooters.
We also talked about some of my favorite wedding photography and posing books. You can find them on the PPS store books category.
